Contraception injection
Effectiveness
Over 99%. Less than 1 woman in 100 will get pregnant in a year.
How it works
Progestogen released slowly into body - stops ovulation and prevents sperm
meeting an egg.
Advantages
Lasts for 12 or 8 weeks depending on brand. You don't have to think about
contraception for as long as the injection works.
Disadvantages
Periods may stop, be irregular or longer. Periods and fertility
may take time to return after stopping. Some women may gain
weight.
Implant
Effectiveness
Over 99%. Less than I woman in 100 will get pregnant in a year.
How it works
Flexible tube put under the arm. Releases the hormone progestogen into
the body - stops ovulation and prevents sperm meeting an egg.
Advantages
Works for 3 years but can be taken out at any time. You don't have to
think about contraception for as long as the implant works.
When the implant is removed - your normal level of fertility
will return.
Disadvantages
Periods are often irregular, much longer or stop at least
for the first year. Some women may gain weight.
